# Elephant Tom, of Durango: "Your Gold-Dust or Your Life"

A Western dime novel by Joseph E. Badger, Jr., continuing his series about frontier outlaw characters. The story concerns a dramatic train rescue: a keen-eyed stranger observes a gang of train wreckers preparing to dynamite a bridge near Durango, Arizona. He signals the oncoming train with a flaming torch, draws his revolvers and shoots two would-be attackers, then boards the locomotive to warn the engineer and force the train into reverse. The wreckers detonate the bridge moments too late. Aboard the train, panicked passengers initially mistake the man for one of the notorious "James Boys" outlaws. The hero-stranger directs armed passengers to investigate the station, where they find the telegraph agent dead—shot through the forehead. The narrative combines gunfight action, narrow escape plotting, and period train-robbery genre conventions.
