Texas Jack, the Prairie Rattler; or, The Queen of the Wild Riders

This issue contains the opening chapters of "Texas Jack, the Prairie Rattler; or, The Queen of the Wild Riders," a Western romance by William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill). The story concerns John B. Omohundro, known as Texas Jack, a skilled rancher, guide, and cowboy. Don Castro Rivera seeks out Texas Jack at a San Antonio bullfight, grateful for Jack's earlier heroism in saving him and his daughter from a charging bull. Now Rivera's daughter, Rena, has been kidnapped by Comanches. Jack pledges to rescue her alone, aided only by Red Snake, a Tonkaway Indian, rejecting Rivera's offer of payment and insisting strategy will succeed where force would fail. The narrative then shifts to reveal Rena in the captors' hands, exhausted and frightened, only to be confronted by Mark Melton—a white renegade who has adopted the identity "Iron Arm" and now leads the Comanches. Melton claims to be Rena's former lover, seeking both fortune and revenge.
