"A Cold Wave at Black Dam" by William R. Eyster, appearing in this Beadle & Adams issue from May 27, 1885. The Western serial follows Pocket Pete, a drifter bound for the town of Bunco, whose burro is shot from under him by six road-agents in ambuscade. The outlaws mistake Pete for someone else—a purported agent sent to remove "Captain Snow"—and attempt to kill him. A one-armed stranger, David Granger ("Double-Shot Dave"), intervenes and breaks up the attack. Pete survives and pursues the outlaws to discover their true motives. The story combines frontier action with mystery involving mistaken identity and concealed mercenary interests.
