The Man of Two Lives: The Story of the Ways and Wiles of a Wicked Set is a detective mystery serial by William H. Manning, serialized in this 1897 Beadle & Adams dime novel. Detective Duke Dorgan is hired by wealthy amateur Philip Woodside to locate Zachary Rose, a lumberman missing for twenty years from Bangor, Maine. Rose's wife, Mrs. Eunice Rose, has pursued him to Jersey City after a sailor reported seeing him. Dorgan accepts the case despite his vague sense of having encountered the missing man before. Philip insists on assisting the investigation for excitement and diversion from his idle life. The serial begins its investigation into Rose's mysterious disappearance and the shadowy world surrounding his absence.
