This issue features "The Twins of Tip-Top" by Jos. E. Badger Jr., author of "Old 749" and "Dan Brown of Denver." The opening chapter, "A Mountain Mendicant," depicts Jessamine Clare, a young woman from the mining town of Tip-Top, riding alone in the hills when she encounters Uncle Billy, a drunk and disheveled tramp who blocks her path and demands money. After he grabs her horse's bridle and makes threatening remarks about ransoming the animal for food, Jessamine lashes him repeatedly with her riding whip and urges her mustang forward through a narrow rocky passage. The tramp's broken rein causes him to fall, and he retaliates by hurling stones at the injured horse, which panics and bolts toward a precipice overlooking Roaring Fork river. Chapter Two shows Mark Mason, a man who loves Jessamine from afar, witnessing the disaster from nearby rocks. Unable to reach her in time, he watches helplessly as her horse and rider plunge over the escarpment into the ravine below.
