The Vendetta of Hate, by Albert W. Aiken, serially published in this December 1888 issue of Beadle and Adams (ten cents). The story concerns Jackson Blake, known in New York society as "Jack Escobedo," a wealthy man from the West who has recently come East to breed racehorses. At Sheepshead Bay racetrack, Blake participates in a ten-thousand-dollar match race between his mare Kentucky Princess and Clinton Van Frelinghuysen's gray horse Commander. Among spectators, a banker's daughter recognizes Blake, suggesting prior acquaintance. The narrative interweaves racetrack intrigue with character introductions: Tom MacDuffie the bookmaker, Count Victor de Morney (a French nobleman), and Barrington Plunket, a broker. Blake's true identity and the circumstances bringing him to the East remain concealed from other characters.
