"The Counterfeiters' Cave" by Marmaduke Dey features detective Sam Sharp arriving in Vermont to pursue a counterfeiting gang. Sharp recruits Green Mountain Joe, a skilled mountain hunter who knows the terrain intimately, offering a $10,000 reward split between them. Joe, accompanied by his two dogs—Pomp, a Cuban bloodhound, and Start, an English pointer—accepts. The gang is believed connected to a Virginia operation run by "Captain Ironnerve"; Sharp's only clue is a partial postmark reading "Londonderry" on an envelope found on a captured burglar. The search begins in the mountainous region of The Glebe. A local boy called Chipmonk, mysterious and undersized despite claiming sixteen years, joins their hunting expedition, which provides cover for their detective work. The story combines frontier adventure with criminal investigation.
