Beadle's New York Dime Library No. 668

This issue of Beadle and Adams (No. 66, August 12, 1891) contains two serials. The lead story, "The Boomer from Blissful Buttes" by Jos. E. Badger Jr., concerns Judge Hugh Chadwick, a respectable mining operator preparing to leave his frontier town. A peculiar stranger named Saul Sunday, calling himself "the Sad Man from San Saba," arrives with a shell-game con apparatus—three walnut shells and a pea. Sunday relates how he was ruined betting on such a game and has sworn a vow to fund an asylum for fools through his gambling winnings. After demonstrating his sleight-of-hand tricks and fleecing both Bolster and Chadwick of dollars, an armed assassin suddenly bursts through the saloon door and shoots the judge. A mysterious second man intervenes, striking the gunman down. The fragment concludes with chaos erupting as onlookers prepare to seize the mysterious rescuer. The second serial, "Solemn Saul's Luck Streak," begins immediately following.
