# Talbot in Arms

This 1893 dime novel by Albert W. Aiken, author of the Dick Talbot series, presents a Western adventure narrative. The story opens with Fernando Bernal, a notorious Mexican brigand, imprisoned in Guaymas awaiting execution. Two mysterious American visitors offer him escape tools and money in exchange for avenging himself on Dick Talbot, the "Ranch King" of Arizona, whom Bernal blames for his capture. Bernal accepts, saws through his chains and cell window bars, and escapes.

The narrative shifts to Silveropolis, a mining camp in Arizona, where Talbot confronts Mexican Mike (Michael Castillo), a former member of Bernal's gang who now operates as a cattle thief ("Maverick Man"). When Talbot accuses Mike of stealing his beef, a violent fight erupts, with Talbot easily defeating the smaller man. The confrontation establishes the central conflict: Bernal's impending revenge against Talbot, complicated by Mike's own antagonism and mysterious forces working against the Ranch King.
