The Dragoon Detective; or, A Man of Destiny

· February 8, 1893

"The Dragoon Detective; or, A Man of Destiny" (subtitled "Road Raiders of the Rockies: A Romance of the Rockies") by Dr. Frank Powell, pseudonym "White Beaver," Chief of the Winnebagoes. The serial opens with an old miner discovering a rich gold strike in a Rocky Mountain ravine near Gilt Edge City, a lawless mining settlement. The miner, known locally as "Judge" for his learning, has been recovering from financial disgrace—he was accused of defrauding those who entrusted him with savings. His gold discovery promises redemption: he can repay those he wronged and restore honor to his family. A mysterious stranger named Richard Ford (alias "Deadly Dick") arrives at The Barracks Hotel, seemingly interested in the old miner. Ford visits the Judge's cabin, claiming to have pursued him for five years, suggesting the Judge's past contains darker secrets than mining fraud.
