This is the first installment of "Corralling the Ranch Counterfeiters" by George C. Jenks, a Western detective story serialized in this 1898 pulp magazine. The narrative follows Wild Pete, a broncho-buster detective who arrives at a Wyoming ranch operated by Robert Grant just as Sam Sharkey and his cowboys attempt to lynch an Irish immigrant, Dan McPhelan, for allegedly stealing a horse. Wild Pete single-handedly intervenes, disarming Sharkey and subduing the lynch mob through displays of strength. The story reveals that Wild Pete and a sympathetic young cowboy named Babe Vincent (Walter Vincent) are working undercover to investigate criminal operations at the ranch, including counterfeiting. Babe reports that Grant's daughter is kept ignorant of the illicit work while the actual operation's location remains hidden. Wild Pete demonstrates knowledge of the gang's members and their backgrounds, particularly taunting Wintry Jim, the one-eyed cowhand, about his gambling expertise.
