This issue features the opening serial "The Wild Steer Riders" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, author of the Buffalo Bill novels. Colonel Horace Fontaine, a Baltimore merchant, flees across the Texas prairie with his daughter Adéle after two of their guides are ambushed and killed. Pursued by apparent Indians, they face capture or death until a mysterious horseman intervenes. The rescuer, Leroy Lamar, single-handedly defeats the attackers, revealing them to be white outlaws disguised as Native Americans—the "Red Revolver Rangers"—planning ransom. Lamar, a cowboy manager on Fontaine's son Ethan's ranch, escorts the Fontaines to safety, having followed them after learning of Ethan's prison escape and murder conviction in Texas.
