This issue contains "Wild Bill and Bandbox Bill; or, The Bravo in Broadcloth" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, a Western adventure serial. Wild Bill and Buffalo Bill, renowned scouts, discover two dead riflemen in ambush and trace the shots to a mysterious cabin on a rocky spur. There they meet Bandbox Bill (also called "The Gentleman in Black," "The Unknown," and "The Undertaker")—a refined, elegantly dressed figure in black broadcloth who reveals he killed the ambushers to save their lives. Bandbox Bill mentions a coffin he has constructed and cryptically promises to meet them later at Glory Hallelujah City. The narrative then shifts to Texas Jack, a wounded scout, meeting with Surgeon Frank Powell, who extracts a bullet. Powell proposes they pursue the "Toll-Takers of the Rockies," a lawless gang, together with Wild Bill and Buffalo Bill.
