Unknown to Valiente, the note is a forgery orchestrated by the sinister Lieutenant Aguero, who intends to murder his romantic rival. American Midshipman Frank Mordaunt overhears Aguero's assassination plot at a wine cafe and intercedes, serving as Valiente's second in an ensuing duel. Though Valiente disarms Aguero with his sword, the Lieutenant demands a pistol duel, which Valiente wins, fatally wounding his opponent. Senorita Camille arrives to discover the duel's true nature—Aguero's attempted murder of an innocent man—casting doubt on the Lieutenant's character and prospects.
