# "The Mystery of the Millionaire Miner"
This illustrated serial appears in Beadle and Adams' pulp weekly, published May 1896. "The Mystery of the Millionaire Miner" opens with a man-overboard incident during a Lake Superior storm aboard the steamer Lake Queen. Millionaire Harry Ward falls—or is pushed—into the water and drowns. Detective Tom Tunnel, aboard the vessel on personal business, witnesses the crime. He overhears Ward tell his killer "Will—Will, don't kill me!" before the body is hurled into the lake.
Tunnel suspects young William Armor, a passenger who loves Ward's daughter Laura, of committing the murder. Ward opposed the romance. Armor becomes defensive when questioned about potential beneficiaries of Ward's death. Tunnel remains uncertain of guilt, however, watching both Armor and another passenger with suspicious "cunning" eyes. Both men become persons of interest as Armor and Tunnel plan to disembark at Marquette to help the grieving Laura.
