Buffalo Bill's Bluff

Β· July 29, 1896

This issue, No. 927 (July 29, 1896), contains the serialized story "Buffalo Bill's Bluff" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. In this installment, Buffalo Bill accepts a dangerous assignment from Loyd Winter, superintendent of the Overland Trail's most perilous section, to identify spies within the company's ranks and eliminate the road-agent gang called the Mounted Sports. A wealthy California miner plans to transport his daughter and treasure overland by coach, unannounced, to avoid robbery. Buffalo Bill undertakes reconnaissance on the mountain trail between Outfit City and Death-Trap Canyon. He is ambushed by the outlaw leader Captain Coolhand and warned against interfering. Later, he encounters a Black Horseman on the trail who surrenders without resistance, whom Buffalo Bill recognizes as "Darkie Dick, the Black Burglar."
