# Dandy Rock's Pledge

"Dandy Rock's Pledge" by G. Waldo Browne is a western adventure serial appearing in this March 1887 issue. Rock Randel, a tough Texan, pledges to a dying man—Roland Maxcy—that he will rescue Maxcy's child. When a masked gang arrives claiming kinship to the corpse, Rock suspects foul play. He prevents them from burying Maxcy alive, but is overwhelmed and captured. During the ensuing fight with a cinnamon bear that attacks the party, Rock escapes his bonds and flees with his rifle down a dark valley. Pursued by the masked leader and his men, Rock races toward a deep ravine, seeking escape through the rugged Sierra terrain as darkness falls.
