Dusky Dick's Doom: Tobe Castor, the Old Scout. A Story of the Sioux Outbreak by Jos. E. Badger, Jr., is a frontier narrative serialized in this weekly publication. The story opens at Edward Wilson's log cabin, where the mysterious Dusky Dick Morgan—a man bearing a permanent bluish tint from a powder explosion—arrives with news of an impending Sioux uprising. After eating, Morgan proposes to protect Wilson's family and property in exchange for Annie Wilson's hand in marriage. Wilson violently rejects both the proposition and the threat Morgan makes if refused. Annie intervenes with a rifle when Morgan attempts to shoot Wilson, forcing the would-be assailant to flee. The arrival of Tobe Castor, an old scout and family friend, concludes this opening installment, with hints of more urgent news to come regarding the Indian troubles.
