Cato, the Creeper; or, The Demon of Dead-Man's Forest by Frederick Dewey (1878) is a frontier adventure narrative set in early Arkansas. The story follows Cato, a freed slave and skilled tracker employed by Captain Charles Downing, a handsome but ruthless leader of an organized robber band operating from a concealed island stronghold in the swamps of Dead-Man's Forest. Downing, attended by his lieutenant Fink and scout Bob Griffith, runs a disciplined criminal operation with coded signals, strict silence protocols, and brutal executions for disobedience. The opening chapter establishes the gang's hideout and introduces Cato's role as a subordinate, culminating in his assignment to bury Fighting Jim, a gang member executed by Downing for insubordination. The narrative emphasizes Downing's capricious cruelty and the atmosphere of fear pervading the outlaw camp.
