# THE SILVER BUGLE: THE INDIAN MAIDEN OF ST. CROIX

This frontier adventure serial is set during the 1862 Sioux uprising in Minnesota. The narrative centers on Minneapolis, a half-Sioux, half-Minnesota maiden raised by the Ashby family near the St. Croix River. When the Sioux brave Conanchet—known as "Bloody Tomahawk"—leads 100 warriors against white settlers to capture Minneapolis and make her his wife, the community takes refuge in a fortified block-house. The protagonist Harry Ashby protects Minneapolis from her own tribe. During a violent thunderstorm on June 12th, mysterious bugle blasts sound from "Ashby's Look-out," prompting confusion about the enemy's intentions. Among the refugees is Miss Jerusha Peatt, an unmarried Massachusetts woman who blames Minneapolis's presence for the attack, while the deformed Mr. Hill, bearing Conanchet's torture scars, seeks vengeance. The tale blends romantic melodrama with frontier siege narrative.
