This frontier romance centers on conflicting suitors competing for Betsey Cass's affections during the post-Harmer defeat period of settlement warfare near Fort Harmer in Ohio. Sam Benson, a skilled hunter and trapper, disparages her cousin Hamilton Cass—a scholarly, physically delicate young man who prefers books to frontier labor—to advance his own position. At a backwoods housewarming gathering, Benson impresses through marksmanship and wit while Hamilton remains silent and withdrawn. Betsey, torn between admiration for Hamilton's learning and frustration at his passivity, finds herself drawn to Benson's vigor and accomplishments. Benson strategically offers to bring a bearskin to her aging father John Cass, whose weakening condition leaves him dependent on hunting for survival. Hamilton's inability or unwillingness to shoulder the hardships of frontier life—contrasted against the dangers of Indian raids following military defeats—forms the central conflict driving the narrative.
