Old Ruff, the Trapper; or, The Young Fur-Hunters (A Beadle and Adams pocket novel, sequel to "Little Rifle") by Capt. "Bruin" Adams follows young fur-hunter Harry Northend searching for his missing bride, Little Rifle, in the Oregon wilderness. After discovering her gone from their camp, Harry visits Fort Abercrombie, then travels to the lodge of Old Ruff Robsart, a seasoned mountaineer and Little Rifle's guardian. Harry confesses his love and engagement to Little Rifle and appeals to Ruff for help finding her. Ruff, who has long sought to provide his charge proper civilization, embraces the plan for Little Rifle to go East with Harry's family. When asked what caused her disappearance, Ruff attributes it to an earthquake that struck before the snowfall, theorizing something extraordinary must have compelled her departure. The men prepare to investigate the campground to uncover details.
