Blue and Gray Weekly, No. 6

This issue of Blue and Gray Weekly presents "Prisoners of War; or, The Boys in Gray in Limbo" by Lieut. Harry Lee, a Civil War serial following Captain Will Prentiss of the Virginia Grays. The narrative opens November 28, 1861, near Manassas, as Prentiss receives orders from General Beauregard to march north and hold Germantown Pike against Union advance. Leading his company on a twenty-mile march, Prentiss discovers his men have strayed into dangerous territory near Union lines along Beaver Run. Encountering Confederate scout Sim Ford, who warns they're surrounded in a Union angle, the Grays face sudden attack. In a decisive flanking maneuver, Prentiss repulses Union infantry and retreats southward. As darkness falls, further Union forces attack from woods; Ford advises holding out until nightfall for escape. The serialized story combines military tactics, skirmish combat, and adventure typical of period war fiction.
