"Después de la Muerte" by Burton Hare

This science fiction novel opens with protagonist Donald Savage returning to his futuristic city by reactor aircraft. Upon landing, he discovers his fiancée Jean Martin failed to meet him as planned. Savage, described as a large, muscular man, has recently returned from international travel and appears dissatisfied with his work and lifestyle. At a bar, friend Frankie Marvin mentions seeing Jean with an unknown woman named Charleen days earlier.

Concerned by Jean's absence, Savage visits her roommate Stella, learning Jean disappeared two days prior after withdrawing clothing and belongings. Savage contacts his mysterious superior to arrange police assistance, then visits police captain Page with Stella. Page's reaction to Jean's photograph suggests prior knowledge of her disappearance. The narrative suggests Savage works in espionage or intelligence, evidenced by his hidden weapon, coded telephone communications, and veiled operational status with authorities.
