Ibbets, a sinister figure in crimson robes, possesses an extraordinary hidden chamber: a metal door opening onto what appears to be hellfire itself. He murders Mersey by forcing him into the flames, leaving a mysteriously burned corpse in an otherwise undamaged automobile—a puzzle that baffles police investigators. The narrative then shifts to Delmont Stack, returning from abroad, who learns of Mersey's death and becomes concerned about missing Gunnison documents worth £100,000.
