This Spanish-language serial by P. V. Debrigode opens in Shanghai, where red-haired American sailor Ross Maloney watches an airplane carrying actress Patsy Brend depart. Malcolm Tresham, a scarred, bald English intelligence agent (Intelligence Service number 29), approaches and reveals he knows Maloney loves Patsy, who left hoping he would stop her. Tresham calls Maloney a fool for letting her go when she reciprocates his feelings. Maloney needs weapons—machine gun, submachine gun, two Colt pistols, and dynamite—which Tresham can procure from a Cantonese smuggler for a hundred-dollar commission. They encounter a shooting attack while discussing visiting a Basque jai-alai (pelota) exhibition called "Jalalad," where mysterious deaths have occurred. Tresham pushes Maloney to safety as gunfire erupts. Tresham misleads police about the shooter's escape route, claiming ignorance when questioned by Maloney about anticipating the attack.
