Metas Sietes Más Perlas by P. V. Debrigode opens aboard the merchant sailing vessel Panther, where American captain Ross Maloney and Guillermina Van Bloeng, a wealthy Dutch heiress, discuss the 1883 Krakatoa eruption and the Batak peoples of Java. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Dutch colonial authorities conducting an inspection. Van Bloeng skillfully manages the situation by invoking her family name and fabricating a narrative: her grandfather Julius Van Bloeng was killed by Malay pirates at a factory on Pettigrew Island, and Maloney heroically rescued her, her brother, and sister-in-law. The authorities, impressed by her account and family connections, interrogate further. The story features romantic tension between the two protagonists, colonial Southeast Asian settings, maritime adventure, and bureaucratic intrigue.
