The story opens with the injured protagonist recovering in a terrestrial hospital after an accident. Two doctors—Harrison and Lorenzi—discover extraordinary physiological anomalies: the patient possesses approximately 6.5 to 8 million red blood cells per cubic millimeter (far exceeding human norms), unusually large lungs, and weighs only twenty-five kilograms despite appearing to be a normal adult male. Doctor Harrison deduces the patient is Martian, attributing these characteristics to adaptation to Mars's lower gravity, thinner atmosphere, and oxygen scarcity.
