Civil War Stories, Vol. 1, No. 1

This issue of Civil War Stories features six historical fiction stories set during the American Civil War. The lead story, "Drums of the Wind" by John Murray Reynolds, follows Private Jed Barrand of the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry, a lanky but skilled soldier stationed in Pennsylvania in May 1863. The narrative opens at a cavalry camp where Barrand faces mockery from Sergeant Nat Wills over military protocol; their tension erupts in a brief fight before Assembly is called. News arrives of Lee and Jackson's victory at Chancellorsville and Confederate movement northward, triggering rapid mobilization. Other featured stories include Bennett Foster's "The Tall Virginian" (32 pages), concerning Major Galen Kitridge of the Confederacy; John Starr's "Rifles of Rebellion," depicting guerrilla warfare in 1864 Missouri; DeWitt Shank's "The Golden Spy," featuring Virginia Carter as a Confederate spy in Washington; Ted Fox's "Admiral Ironsides," set aboard the Merrimac; and John Wiggin's "Captain Sabre," depicting cavalry action across the Rappahannock.
