This issue contains two serials by Edward L. Wheeler, the author credited for the Deadwood Dick series. The primary story, "The Buffalo Demon," opens on the Missouri River frontier where a squatter couple, Jack and Peggy Bulard, discover an abandoned infant in a swamp after hearing mysterious cries at midnight. Jack retrieves a living baby girl from a marsh pool; her twin brother lies drowned at the pool's bottom, weighted down with strings. The dead child bears a strange hand-shaped birthmark on its neck, while the survivor wears a gold chain with a precious stone locket. Jack and Peggy resolve to raise the girl and hunt for whoever abandoned the children. The narrative then jumps seventeen years forward, introducing a company of horsemen traversing the prairie, including two apparent leaders. The second story, "The Border Vultures," is also presented by Wheeler, though its content is less legible in the OCR.
