Though physically healing well—his eyes undamaged, his reconstructed face promising full recovery within weeks—Mortimer struggles with psychological fragmentation. Only two names surface from his obliterated past: Teresa and Gavin Holden. The mention of Gavin Holden triggers violent, vengeful impulses; Mortimer becomes convinced he must kill this man, identified as a cowardly modern gangster. As his ship approaches San Francisco—his hometown and the port where most of his battalion originated—Mortimer prepares for homecoming while haunted by these fragmentary memories and murderous compulsions he cannot fully comprehend.
