This Spanish-language detective story, "Nardos para tu viuda" (Flowers for Your Widow) by Arnold Briggs, translated by A. López, concerns the poisoning death of Jonathan Lindsay in his Astoria, Queens home. Mrs. Beatriz Lindsay, a composed twenty-six-year-old married two years to the fifty-six-year-old wealthy man, confesses to Captain Milton Carey of the Criminal Investigation Department that she purchased arsenic from pharmacist Harriman that afternoon, ostensibly for rats, then dissolved it into her husband's nightly tea-with-mint infusion at eleven o'clock while the household servants, the Seymours, attended the theater. She admits the poisoning directly but refuses to provide any motive, claiming she had no reason to wish her husband dead. Carey finds her composed, intelligent demeanor suspicious, suspecting she feigns mental illness or obscures her true motivations for the killing.
