This 1850 publication describes the overland journey of the "California Phalanx," a company of twenty-five adventurers from multiple nations traveling to California during the Gold Rush. Compiled by Professor W.M. Beschke from the journal of George Adam, a second-in-command to French leader Carrel, the narrative traces the expedition's formation in New Orleans in October 1849 and subsequent departure.

The company includes French, American, German, Italian, Spanish, and Mexican members, plus Waanataa, a Sioux Indian guide of mixed heritage. The journal documents early voyage details: departure from New Orleans aboard the steamboat Martha Washington, arrival at St. Louis, and provisions-gathering at Fort Independence. Musical entertainment from German members enlivens the journey. At Independence, the company debates travel methods before selecting mules over wagons for navigating rivers and mountains.
