This serial by Hal Standish follows Fred Fearnot, an American tourist, and his companions—including his friend Terry, two young ladies (Evelyn and Margie), and others—through Constantinople and the Mediterranean. After an encounter with aggressive street peddlers in Constantinople, Fred suggests departing for Vienna via Italy. The party books passage to Brindisi aboard a steamer. The narrative includes extensive historical exposition on Constantinople, the Crusades, Ottoman-Christian relations, and comparative decline of Greece and Rome. Aboard ship, a comedic subplot develops when Terry verbally spars with a condescending English tourist over whether cannon at the Dardanelles are kept loaded, which the ship's captain confirms Terry got right. The Englishman, humiliated, begins snubbing Terry. The excerpt concludes with Terry taking revenge at dinner, manipulating the Briton's silverware.
