This 1924 adventure serial, originally appearing in Adventure Magazine (March–April), follows three white men fighting for survival against indigenous warriors in the South American jungle. The narrative opens with a Jivero head-hunter under the influence of a hallucinogenic bark decoction, receiving demonic encouragement to murder rivals and harvest heads. A mysterious light-skinned jungle warrior—later revealed to be José, a Spanish-descended leader—spears the intoxicated Jivero with deadly precision. José commands an organized force of indigenous warriors armed with bows, spears, machetes, and carbines, moving toward an unknown target. Gunfire erupts: three white men, distinguished by black, blond, and red hair, defend their position back-to-back against overwhelming numbers, demonstrating expert marksmanship despite being outnumbered and encircled. The narrative emphasizes primitive weapons versus modern rifles and the deadly efficiency of the embattled trio.
