Diet by Eleanor M. Ingram

This issue contains two serials by different authors. The first, by an unnamed writer, is a mystery-adventure set in the Kentucky mountains. A railroad agent named Weighborne and his unnamed companion travel to a remote region to survey land for a branch railroad. Weighborne warns his associate about the dangerous local power broker Jim Garvin, a county judge who has orchestrated multiple murders through intermediaries to eliminate political opponents and maintain control, including the prosecuting attorney Keithley. Their destination is the home of Calloway Marcus, Keithley's former law partner, who currently travels under armed guard. The narrative emphasizes the region's isolation and Garvin's unchallenged authority through intimidation of witnesses and jurors.

The second story, "A Short Story" by Eleanor M. Ingram, concerns Miss Judith Richmond, a pretentious young artist and strict vegetarian who travels with her elderly father Mr. Richmond. At a hotel, she contemptuously observes a vigorous young man, Gene Hamilton, eating heartily. Hamilton proves to be an acquaintance of her father's. Despite Miss Richmond's vegetarian ideology and disdain for carnivorous appetites, Hamilton persistently courts her while she maintains righteous indignation. The narrative follows their antagonistic interactions, culminating in Hamilton securing a dance with the resistant Miss Richmond at an evening ball.
