This issue (May 1919, Vol. XVIII, No. 4) contains fiction, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. Featured works include Thomas Grant Springer's serial "Studies in Saffron" (Part I: "The Blood of the Dragon"), following Kan Wong, a Chinese sampan boatman of noble ancestry degraded by the Taiping Rebellion, who signs a contract for foreign labor aboard a steamship in Shanghai. Other fiction includes Henry Payson Dowst's complete novelette "The Charlatan," Cleveland Moffett's "Consider the Moving Staircase," Mary Barratt's "The Dark Pool," and Cyrus Townsend Brady's "White Treasure." Verse contributors include Richard Le Gallienne, Richard Morland, and others. "The Play's the Thing" by an Insider discusses theatrical matters. Louise Rice contributes "The Handwriting Detective."
