NEW WESTERN MAGAZINE, Volume 16, No. 2 (January 1948), contains frontier fiction and features. The lead serial is "Death Waits at Pistol Bend," featuring Lang Horn, a suave riverboat gambler traveling the Missouri in 1875 aboard the packet Lady Darling. Horn observes Judge William Dale and his daughter boarding at Saint Louis, bound for the lawless town of Pistol Bend. Horn's notoriety stems from a duel in New Orleans where he killed the entire La Roche family—father Francois and his three sons—in a series of blade encounters, establishing his reputation as a skilled and lethal fighter. Other contents include William Corcoran's "Cold Steel—Iron Men!" about Clay Amberson confronting a killer; W. Blackburn's "The Silent Guns"; and action stories including "Dollar-a-Mile Horse" by Jim Kjelgaard. A nonfiction feature by James G. MacCormack, "Drums of the Dead," recounts the 1867 execution of outlaw Bill Singleton, who wagered on his cigar outlasting him and requested his skin fashioned into a drum.
