# NEW WORLDS SCIENCE FICTION, No. 99 (October 1960)

This issue contains five science fiction stories and features by established authors. The novelette "The Apprentice" by James White concerns a personnel manager at a department store dealing with an extraterrestrial employee—a four-legged, furry, centaur-like being from thirty-seven light-years away named Hamrigg. The story opens with the alien causing workplace disruptions, including damaging merchandise while dancing with a human coworker at the music counter.

Short stories include Colin Kapp's "The Exposing Eye," E.C. Tubb's "Memories Are Important," W.T. Webb's "The Red Dominoes," and J.G. Ballard's "The Voices of Time." Kenneth Johns contributes the article "Anyone At Home?" The issue also features editor John Carnell's editorial discussing New Worlds' failed North American publication venture with Great American Publications, and a guest editorial by bibliographer Sam Moskowitz explaining the magazine's British origins. Book reviews by Leslie Flood and additional columns round out the publication, marking the magazine's fifteenth year.
