Additional stories include "The Mating Impulse" (Edwin Balmer), "The Fall of the Play" (Peter B. Kyne), and "Cephas the Paladin" (Albert Payson Terhune), which concerns making a hero of a pig. "The Maid of Paranito Mine" by W. L. George describes a young mining engineer prospecting a fabulously rich mine in Mexico. Serial stories include "When the Red Hills Threaten" (Vingie E. Roe), concerning two characters discovering life's meaning after fighting death together, and "The Fight on Standing Stone" (Francis Lynde), depicting Wall Street manipulations affecting railroad construction in the mountains.
