Nightmare Planet by Murray Leinster (complete novel) follows the descendants of castaways from the wrecked space-liner Icarus, stranded forty generations ago on an uncolonized, cloud-covered world. Originally seeded with microorganisms and basic flora and fauna by the Ecological Preparation Ship Ludred, the planet evolved into a nightmarish environment of riotous, aggressive biological growth. The humans have devolved into near-savages, losing all memory of their origins, technology, fire, and even the existence of sunlight beyond the perpetual cloud cover. The narrative begins with dawn breaking over their valley home.
