This installment of the novel, set in July 1870, finds Ellen Adair at Eastsea on the English coast with her ailing guardian Mrs. Cumberland, who suffers from a heart condition. Ellen pines for Arthur Bohun, distant in London caring for his ill uncle James. Arthur unexpectedly arrives at Eastsea and encounters Ellen at the shore, where a street singer coincidentally performs "Ellen Adair." That evening, Mrs. Cumberland confronts Arthur privately, demanding to know his serious intentions toward Ellen, having received paternal consent (meant for another suitor, Mr. Graves) from Ellen's father in Australia. Arthur confesses limited means but a newfound inheritance of eight hundred pounds yearly from a deceased relative. However, Arthur's uncle Sir Nash threatens disinheritance if Arthur marries against family wishes. Arthur resolves to propose a secret marriage to Ellen, rationalizng that future circumstances will permit its revelation.
