The Argosy, Vol. XIII

This installment of "Within the Maze" by the author of East Lynne appears in The Argosy for April 1, 1872. The serial depicts life at Foxwood Court in Kent during June. Mrs. Cleeve and her companion Miss Blake breakfast at the estate while awaiting the return of Cleeve's daughter Lady Andinnian and her husband Sir Karl from the Continent. Miss Blake, harboring lingering resentment toward Sir Karl, has begun establishing herself in the village of Foxwood. Frustrated by the local church's plainness, she corresponds with Rev. Guy Cattacomb about establishing a new, more ritualistic parish. While walking near the estate gates, Miss Blake discovers Clematis Cottage and learns of a mysterious neighboring property called "the Maze"—a large house surrounded by a confusing labyrinth of trees and paths, formerly occupied by the reclusive Mr. Throcton and now inhabited by a solitary young lady who rarely emerges.
