The Argosy, Vol. 22

This September 1876 issue of The Argos features Chapter XXV of "Edina" by Mrs. Henry Wood, author of "East Lynne." The Raynor family, financially ruined, depart their estate Eagles' Nest in rainy weather. They travel to London and discover their new modest home fully furnished—Edina has secretly purchased furniture with inheritance money and arranged for boarders and day pupils to establish a school, preventing their destitution. Mrs. Raynor is moved to tears by this generosity; her daughter Alice struggles with the reduced circumstances despite her mother's reminder of their mercies. When Edina suggests Charles seek a clerk position rather than pursue an army commission, he resists, considering it beneath his station. He resolves instead to visit Colonel Cockburn at the Army and Navy Club to secure an officer's commission through the Colonel's influential brother, only to learn Cockburn is away at Bath.
