# Called to the Rescue
Chapter VII of this serial novel finds Sir Marcus Combermere, a retired physician known for sound counsel, meeting with Adela Granard in his study. Adela explains that she has taken charge of Emily, daughter of Mrs. Dangerfield and stepdaughter to Professor Dangerfield, who has been tormenting both mother and child. Sir Marcus advises caution, suspecting Dangerfield may have spies watching them. He insists Adela and Emily remain at Comber Court for safety, noting that while Dangerfield controls the family income, Mrs. Dangerfield has resisted surrendering the capital secured for Emily's inheritance.
Later, Paul—revealed as Dangerfield's spy hidden behind a window curtain—emerges and encounters officer Ernest Archdale, who mistakes him for a messenger. In Archdale's room, Paul reveals he was sent regarding a debt and horse-racing fraud, but offers his services as a trusted servant to help resolve the matter discreetly, fearing Sir Marcus's suspicions.
