Called to the Rescue (serialized, Chapter XIX)

This Victorian domestic serial follows young Ernest Archdale, a former soldier taking his first position at the counting-house of Bourne and Son. The chapter depicts Ernest's gradual acceptance in his new profession, gaining respect from colleagues through diligence and courtesy despite the monotonous drudgery and physical discomfort of desk work. Mr. Bourne approves of his progress; Mrs. Bourne extends maternal solicitude. Visiting friend Cecilia Wilmot and invalid Miss Medlicott encounter Ernest while shopping in London with Mrs. Bourne. During a carriage stop near Holborn, Ernest injures his previously-damaged leg assisting the nervous Miss Medlicott when a horse becomes restive. Archdeacon Burleigh, encountered by chance, tends to Ernest and convinces Mrs. Bourne to proceed homeward, undertaking responsibility for the injured young man's care.
