The Argosy, April 1883, Chapter X: "Sir John"

This domestic narrative follows Winifred Power and her mother Mrs. Chandos-Fane as they visit the country estate of the wealthy, philanthropic Sir John Hatherley. At church in the village of Elmsleigh, Winifred observes Sir John's son Mark and his family, including Mrs. Hatherley (described as "an octoroon born in Jamaica") and her twin daughters. Later at The Limes, Sir John—a retired brewer turned railway speculator and knight—receives them in theatrical fashion, delivering a lecture on art and bibliography. He exhibits his rare book collection, including an illuminated psalter for which he paid £800. When Winifred questions the authentication of such manuscripts, Sir John displays irritation at her inquiry. Mark persistently asks about a missing illustrated Gerusalemme Liberata sent to the binder, prompting Sir John to feign a heart attack. Conversing with Mark afterward, Winifred shares anecdotes of a Parisian bibliophile, noting Mark's subtle skepticism toward his father's motives.
