This issue of Argosy from October 1886 presents Chapters XXXV–XXXVI of "Lady Valeria," a domestic serial novel.

In Chapter XXXV, Mr. Paramount seeks help from Vicar Eustace regarding his daughter Elsie, who has fallen into a mysterious mental decline despite improved physical health. When Hester Archdale unexpectedly arrives to return a raincloak to Mrs. Goodliffe, she privately questions curate de Cressy about a remark he made to Fräulein Klitz concerning her deceased friend Mr. Poynter. De Cressy reveals that on the night of Poynter's disappearance, he witnessed the man walking through the churchyard at moonlight, moving as if in a trance, then vanishing—though he previously kept silent fearing disbelief.

Chapter XXXVI shows Elsie attending church and desperately seeking Mrs. Damien's whereabouts, then experiencing an emotional breakdown. Mrs. Damien unexpectedly returns early from Paris, appearing at the church to reunite with Eustace, having abandoned her holiday. She speaks affectionately of Professor Montrose and reveals she is needed and eager to resume her place in the parish community.
