# Lady Grace by Mrs. Henry Wood
This serial installment (Chapter V: "The Lads") from the March 1887 issue depicts domestic life at an English country rectory. The Reverend Ryle Baumgarten, his wife Lady Grace (formerly an earl's daughter), and their children occupy the narrative focus. The chapter centers on young Cyras (five) and his half-brother Charles (three), contrasting the bold, masterful Cyras with the gentle, timid Charles. Their nursemaid Jaquet favors Charles, resenting Cyras. Lady Grace has settled contentedly into modest rectory life, though her mother Lady Avon questions certain household management decisions. The boys are forbidden attendance at the local Midsummer Fair; during an afternoon drive with Lady Avon, Cyras glimpses a gypsy encampment across a common, fascinating him greatly. Later, with visitors present, the boys disappear from the house—their whereabouts becoming unclear by day's end.
