Lady Grace by Mrs. Henry Wood (author of East Lynne), serialized in the May 1887 issue, presents domestic melodrama centered on financial ruin. The Dean of Denham, despite his ecclesiastical station, faces arrest for accumulated debts incurred through years of extravagant living—largely his wife's spending habits. A sheriff's officer arrives at his home during a formal dinner party for bishops. Unable to secure funds from his banker or lawyer, the Dean confesses to his wife that he must surrender himself to prison the following morning. Lady Grace, initially bewildered that a clergyman could face imprisonment, learns the full extent of their crisis: additional money was advanced to their son Charles to cover his own debts. Determined to prevent her husband's imprisonment, Lady Grace departs in the evening to seek financial assistance from her brother, Lord Avon, who has previously aided them.
